KANTOSHO

KANTOSHO

Kantosho, a place where one may gaze at the ocean, is half way up Mt. Kamo at the southern end of Oshiko shrine. 6.5 meters high and 24 meters in diameter, Kantosho rock is noted for three Chinese characters, which bear the meaning of "gaze", "wave" and "place". The characters were written by Bunpo Nagane as a memento for his son. On the west side of the rock there is an epilogue written by Goseki Nagane.
From the top of the stone one can look south past row upon row of houses and finally see the Harima Sea. This place has been given the name, "Kantosho". Sunno Kawai, the leader of the lord's retain characters chiseled in the stone at his own expense, seeing them as suitable words for Mt. Kamo which Lord Sakai, master of the clan, loved.
