Takasago is located in Hyogo prefecture in Western Japan. It is situated on the Seto Inland Sea approximately 40 kilometers west of Kobe. It borders the City of Kakogawa to the north and east and Himeji to the west. Its area is 34 square kilometers and its population, approximately 99,000. The city is comprised of eight districts: Takasago-cho, Arai-mura, Iho-mura, Sone-cho, Yoneda-cho, Amida-cho and Kitahama-mura. The first four of these formed the original city in 1954, with the latter four being added soon after. In terms of population Takasago is the tenth largest local government area in Hyogo Prefecture. It has a comparatively mild climate. The low lying areas of the city were once part of the seabed and it is believed that the surrounding hills formed the coastline at that time. Sea shells have been found on the surrounding hills of Mt. Hikasa and Mt. Tatsu. The settlement that became Takasago city was established on the delta at the mouth of the Kako River. This gave rise to the name of "Taka" "sago" which literally means "high" "sand", a reference to the vast amounts of sand deposited at the mouth of the Kako River. Prior to Edo era Takasago remained a relatively Small settlement. However, in 1600, Ikeda Terumasa became the lord here, and then Takasago flourished as a port and distribution center. He ordered the construction of a canal linked to the Kako River, within which a grid street pattern and zones of specialized land uses were established. He also arranged for the relocation of a "hyakken-gura" from Kyoto. Special boats called "takasebune" from the upper reaches of the Kako River transported Rice. However, as land transportation have taken the place of maritime transportation, Takasago's importance as a port and distribution center declined. Despite this, Takasago had a number of natural advantages for the development of industry, including a shallow waterfront area suited to land reclamation, abundance of fresh water and approximately to the large urban areas of Kobe and Osaka. This allowed the decline in the port and distribution activities to be offset by industrialization. These industries included paper, food, iron, steel, machinery, ceramics, chemical and power generation. Takasago is now a major industrial area in the region and the city council has recently committed itself to improving the quality of life for Takasago's citizens. Takasago is well known as the birthplace of classical song "Youkyoku Takasago", which is a famous wedding song throughout Japan, and thus we declared this city as "The Bridal City Takasago" in 1988. We aim to construct a happy and healthy town, which will fully become a "Bridal City".
